Mark 6:17–29

Machaerus crowns a rugged hill southwest of Madaba, overlooking the Dead Sea. Walking among the surviving columns and walls of this Herodian fortress brings the witness of John the Baptist into view.

01

Biblical context

Mark 6:17–29 and Matthew 14:3–12 record John's imprisonment and death, but neither Gospel names the place. Scripture alone therefore does not establish Machaerus as the location.

02

History and tradition

Josephus, in Antiquities 18, records that John was imprisoned and killed at Machaerus. The fortress was a strategic Hasmonean and Herodian stronghold and later a centre of resistance to Rome. Its connection with John rests on this ancient historical source, not on a biblical place-name.

03

Pilgrim reflection

John chose truth over safety. Consider where comfort has produced silence, and what it means to speak truth with both courage and love.

04

On-site notes

The route to the summit is exposed and uphill. Bring water, a hat, and walking shoes, and avoid the strongest midday heat and high winds.

05

What to bring

Grippy walking shoes, water, a hat and sunscreen, a windbreaker, and a light walking pole if steep climbs are difficult.
