Genesis 32:22–31

The modern Zarqa River is commonly associated with the biblical Jabbok. Flowing from the highlands of Gilead toward the Jordan, the river recalls Jacob's return and his night of wrestling.

01

Biblical context

Genesis 32:22–31 says that Jacob sent his household and possessions across the Jabbok, remained alone, wrestled with a man until daybreak, and received the name Israel. He named the place Peniel, but the exact modern ford is unknown.

02

History and tradition

The Jabbok formed an important boundary and route through Ammon and Gilead. Because the modern Zarqa basin has changed through urbanisation, it is wiser to understand the wider landscape than to claim one exact crossing point.

03

Pilgrim reflection

What are you still holding through the night? Reflect on the end of Jacob's old strategies and the beginning of walking in a name received from God.

04

On-site notes

This is a landscape rather than a single developed pilgrimage park. Plan the exact stop with a local guide, and check valley access and road conditions during the rainy season.

05

What to bring

A route confirmed with a local guide, grippy shoes, water and snacks, long trousers, and a rain layer in the wet season.
