John 1:28 · Mark 1:9–11
Al-Maghtas lies on the eastern bank of the Jordan River north of the Dead Sea and is traditionally identified with Bethany Beyond the Jordan. The pilgrimage landscape includes Tell Al-Kharrar and the churches of Saint John the Baptist.
Biblical context
John 1:28 names Bethany Beyond the Jordan as the place where John was baptising. Mark 1:9–11 records Jesus being baptised by John in the Jordan, the Spirit descending, and the heavenly voice declaring him the beloved Son. Scripture does not provide a modern coordinate.
History and tradition
Roman and Byzantine churches, baptismal installations, and monastic remains show that early Christians commemorated this area as the baptism place. UNESCO inscription in 2015 recognises that pilgrimage landscape; the remains do not establish one exact point in the river as certain.
Pilgrim reflection
The passage bears witness to Jesus as the beloved Son upon whom the Spirit descends. Let the location serve the text by directing attention to Christ's identity, obedience, and the beginning of his public ministry.
